The 5th step is PAINT SELECTION. You might be thinking, “Why is paint last?” Because choosing a paint color should be done AFTER all the other room elements have been chosen. Here’s why: - If you choose that violet wall paint first, you’ll be “locked” into it, trying to find matching purple décor among a few dozen pieces of furniture available = hard to do! - However, if you choose your art, pillows, and rug first to coordinate, there are a few thousand paint colors to go with your choices = much easier to do! Make sense? OK, what Color?By and large, white is best, because it presents a beautiful, clean backdrop for your amazing furnishings, which will draw your potential guests in! Simply White by Benjamin Moore will work in the majority of situations. (It has a touch of warmth to it, but really is white, not cream, like it might appear on the screen.) Go with Decorator’s White by Ben Moore if you have Carrera marble in the space, or a very “warm” South-facing room that you’d like to tone down. If your room has no windows, do white ONLY on the ceiling. Don’t do white walls—it’ll fall flat and drab. Instead, consider a pale blue, such as Ben Moore’s Glass Slipper. Are there Wall Colors to Avoid?Yep--brown/tan. I don't want to sound harsh, but it does look like a boring, ploughed dirt field way too often! Also, avoid green in bathrooms & bedrooms, because it tends to make skin look sick and sallow--and those are rooms where lots of skin shows. What about Sheen?Walls = eggshell Ceiling = flat Trim = semi-gloss or gloss What about undertones, direction of window light, muddy vs. clean colors, choosing paint for multi-space rooms, light bulb hue, & more? These issues really do matter when choosing color!! But they need individualized attention--in other words, I'm not able to cover all that in a simple blog post, so would need to help you in person. Please call! I'd love to help you out with all this--it's what I do best!
